C Y T
Dramatized by Charlotte B. Chorpenning. One of the classics of the children's theatre. 6 women, 7 men, 1 cow, villagers. Three sets. Peasant costumes.
This play is full of magic. From the first act, when the beanstalk grows up in full view of the audience, miracles begin to happen right before your eyes. Up in the Giant's house, above the clouds, Jack is nearly caught in a breathtaking chase over the stage, and escapes only with the help of the Giant's wife. Then as Jack climbs toward home, there is a beautiful and magnificent scene on the beanstalk, where the Man in the Moon tests his courage. Jack proves his mettle by finding a way not only to rescue the Giant's wife, but also to save his own mother from Rafe Heywood's greedy schemes. And when he finally chops down the beanstalk -- with the Giant on it -- the audience is jubilant. |

Adapted by Larry Snipes from the book of Kentucky author James Still. In an Appalachian setting the classic Jack and the Beanstalk is enhanced by traditional folk melodies and audience participation. Single setting, simple solutions. 6 males (may be played by 3) and 3 females (may be played by 2). Appalacian "fantasy" costumes.
All is well for Jack and his Mam. They have their home roof, a patch of land, and a cow. One spring, when the cow goes dry life on Wolfpen Creek has to change. In hard times no one wants to buy a cow "dry as a hat". Jack trades his bossy to a Gypsy for "seeds". And Jack is in for trouble. His adventures with the High Tall Giant Woman and her husband teach him that "the simple life is right for Jack." Audience participation is invoked in the nick of time. |

By Saul Levitt. At last! A powerful, true play about the great Indian sports hero for young audiences -- and all ages, by one of America's great playwrights, Emmy-award winning Saul Levitt. Single unit set. 7 men.
Indian and early 20th century American dress. Here is an exciting dramatization of the memorable life of Jim Thorpe, Sac and Fox Indian, football, baseball, track star, winner of 2 gold medals in the 1912 Olympics, cited by King Gustave of Sweden as "the greatest athlete in the world." His life was a drama -- a sudden rise to world-wide fame, a tragic fall when through an innocent incident his medals were forfeited and his honors stripped away. Staged with vivid scenes of athletic triumph and tribal pageantry, this visually stunning musical play is told as a vision of the late Chief Blackhawk, the old warrior of the Sac and Fox tribe, ancestor of Thorpe. This remarkable work was commissioned by the Alliance for Arts Education of the John F. Kennedy Center, where it was premiered in the Eisenhower Theatre. It was nationally toured to universal acclaim by the Performing Arts Repertory Theatre, playing to hundreds of thousands of young people. |

Adapted by Edward Mast. Based on the Mowgli stories of Rudyard Kipling, this dramatization places the jungle of India on a children's playground. The unit set is a jungle-gym; the animals are costumed as playground characters. The dialogue and action refer to the jungle, but the play draws color and style from a child's intense world of playfulness, loyalty, adventure, and betrayal. A minimum of 8 actors to play 15 roles, gender various.
Mowgli the humanchild grows up in the Jungal, raised by wolves under the guidance of Baloo the bear. The tiger Sherakhan killed the parents and wants the boy's flesh, but Bagheera the lone panther protects him. Mowgli grows up wild and unconcerned, believing he's a wolf; but the Tiger works long and hard to poison the wolfpack against him. With rope stolen from the human village, Mowgli meets and destroys Sherakhan; but his use of "manthing" has broken Jungal Law. Mowgli must choose whether to defy the Law or leave the Jungal forever. |

Adapted by Aurand Harris from three of Rudyard Kipling's "Just So Stories." 4 women, 5 men, extras if desired. Unit set. Primitive man and animal costumes.
When the world was so new and all, man meets woman, invites her to share his cave, which she pretties up with her touches. She teaches him to tame the Dog and the Horse for his uses, but the Cat resists her charms, and when the baby comes, he tricks her into allowing him to sit by the fire and walk by himself. The Camel, with his grumbling "Humph," is chastened, by severe punishment, into lightening man's burden. And finally it's Man-and-Woman's Child who uses a crude drawing to send a message. This is widely misinterpreted, and nearly precipitates a war. But it was a good idea -- wasn't it?
Each of these three stories may be presented independently, if desired. |
