By David Saar. First presented by Childsplay, Inc. at the Tempe Performing Arts Center. The story of THE YELLOW BOAT Is a glorious affirmation of a child's life, and the strength and courage of all children. Recommended for children of age 8 and older, parents, families and adults. Open stage with simple set pieces. Contemporary costumes. CAST: 7 (3 F, 4 M)

THE YELLOW BOAT is based on the true story of David and Sonja Saar's son, Benjamin, who was born with congenital hemophilia, and died in 1987 at the age of 8 of AIDS related complications. A uniquely gifted visual artist, Benjamin's buoyant imagination transformed his physical and emotional pain into a blaze of colors and shapes in his fanciful drawings and paintings. A Scandinavian folksong tells of three little boats: "One was blue, one was red, and one was yellow as the sun. They sailed far out to sea. The blue one returned to the harbor. The red one sailed home too. But the yellow boat sailed up to the sun." Benjamin always concluded his bedtime ritual by saying, "Mom, you can be the red boat or the blue boat, but I am the yellow boat." Benjamin's remarkable voyage continues to touch audiences around the world.

By Aurand Harris. Premiered at STAGE ONE: The Louisville Children's Theatre. From the masterful story-teller of the stage comes a memorable retelling of the world's first classic of horses, BLACK BEAUTY by Anne Sewell. A favorite of children and horse lovers, of course. Suggested percussion, rhythmic movement, and chanting adds to the sensibility of the horse characters. Open Stage. 1870 English costumes and coveralls with costume pieces for the horses, suggested. Author visualized casting 2 F, 5 M as the humans, 3 G, 2 B as the horses. Original cast featured 4 F, 5 M doubling all the roles. CAST: 12 ( 2 F, 5 M, 3 G, 2 B), or 9 (4 F, 5 M) with doubling.

Imaginatively evoking a world of horses through voices, percussion, and rhythm, the playwright commences with the birth of a colt. Then from the first we follow little Black Beauty's growth, education, discoveries of the world, including unkindness, the whip, training, friends, and above all humankind. At last, in a theatrical world of horses, people, and adventure, Black Beauty is finally a fully grown horse.

Adapted by Alan Broadhurst. First staged by the College Repertory of Doncaster Technical College, Yorkshire, England. Lusty comedy, bright, brash, human, and live, "tuppence-coloured," about a young man who succeeded in business, through the initiative of a most unusual Cat. Six sets. 18th century English costumes. CAST: 17 + (5 F, 12 M) plus extras.

Arriving in London hungry and homeless, Dick Whittington acquires a cat named Samantha, which he cherishes as his sole possession. Hired as a kitchen boy by Alderman Fitzwarren, he stands in the way of Fitzwarren's dishonest apprentice, Hodge, who contrives to disgrace him and send him packing with his cat. On the way out of London, Samantha reveals a remarkable ability not only to understand the Bow bells, but to express herself in lucid terms. Using persuasive measures, she leads Dick back to London, where she sails to the Orient in Dick's interest, and by her performance at the colorful court of the Emir of Ucasee, makes a fortune for her master.
