CHANGING OR SHORTENING A PLAY SCRIPT has restrictions. The play script is the intellectual property of the author and is licensed to be performed as written. For some play scripts the author has indicated within the play script permission for changes such as gender, casting, shortening to reduce length, language considerations , etc. Authors may also have Authorized Short Versions available through Anchorage Press Plays. ALWAYS inquire of the publisher if you desire a shorter version of the play because performance must be licensed within the criteria given by the author. No books may be returned, exchanged or sent on approval. |

FAQs
ROYALTIES and PERFORMANCE FEES
If we read play scripts in my classroom do I need to pay a performance fee?
ANSWER: Using the words of the play script, presented as a performance before an audience, requires the payment of a performance fee called a royalty.
If your reading or presentation is a CLASS PROJECT you will not be required to pay a performance fee.
If your reading or presentation is a CLASS PERFORMANCE, you may be required to pay a performance fee.
See the definitions below.
CLASS PROJECT: Reading or Presenting a Play Script in the Classroom.
A play script read or presented in a classroom project, attended by the students of that same class and educational support personnel, requires no performance royalty fee for this use.
CLASS PERFORMANCE: Reading or Presenting a Play Script in the Classroom with an Audience
A class project transforms into a performance when “external” audience members are in attendance. An “external” audience member is defined by Anchorage as any spectator that is not part of the class producing the play or faculty and administrators. (Elected officials, school board members and others responsible for oversight of education are considered administrators.)
Do I need to pay a royalty fee if a parent comes to class to see a reading or presentation of a play script in our classroom?
ANSWER: Parents, family members, guests, and students (who are not a part of that class) are considered “external” audience members who change a class project to a performance before an audience.
We understand that sometimes a classroom project has audience guests, planned or unplanned, that may change the status of your in-class presentation.
Anchorage Press Plays will not charge you a royalty when 4 or fewer “external” audience members are present in the Class Project Reading. (Note this is special to Anchorage and does not necessarily apply to other publishers.)
A Class Project becomes a performance with an audience when 5 or more “external” audience members are in attendance. A performance royalty fee is due for each performance with an external audience. The amateur performance royalty fees are listed on our website and in our catalogue or you can contact Anchorage directly. We are happy to help and advise you.
Do we need to pay a performance royalty fee for our Contest Play?
ANSWER: Contest performances require a performance royalty payment. Many of the state contests require that you present a notice indicating that you have paid the performance royalty fee before performing. Performing your contest play before an audience at your school requires a performance royalty payment.
